Sam Budd explains how he has harnessed the strengths of his ADHD to launch a highly successful marketing agency

Sam Budd was seen by his teachers as an unruly child. Aged nine, he was expelled from school for the third time on this occasion for being disruptive and having angry outbursts.Around 5 per cent of children and 3 to 4 per cent of adults in the UK have ADHD. The exact cause is unknown, but the disorder tends to be hereditary and neuroimaging studies suggest there are differences in the brains of people with and without the condition.Away from school, Sam also had a difficult home life.

“When feelings of low self worth are triggered in me, I push myself really hard to prove I’m worthy. It’s almost to the point of abuse. “I thought, how can I speak so articulately, come up with creative ideas and present to a class – nowadays I can captivate a whole room of hundreds of people – but I can’t write 100 words?” he said.

In 2019, Sam launched his own agency, Buddy Media Group. He’s worked with large brands including Apple, Proctor and Gamble, Bacardi and Spotify. When you purposefully breathe deeply and slowly, your brain tells your body that it’s safe to relax. You move out of the fight or flight mode and your body can begin to function normally again.

He believes positive attributes of the disorder are being super-intuitive and having a highly creative mind.
