Tasmania's available rental properties are at the lowest levels ever, new report shows

Anglicare's latest rental affordability report has recorded the lowest ever number of properties for rent across the state. The annual snapshot counted the properties listed for rent on a single weekend and assessed whether or not they were affordable for people on low incomes, such as Newstart, the age pension and minimum wage.

In the snapshot, taken on the weekend of March 23, only 1,050 properties were for rent across Tasmania, and of those just 212 were considered affordable for low-income households, while 460 were affordable for those on minimum wage."People on low incomes need somewhere to live… so that they can find a job, so that they can keep their job, so that their children can go to school. Without somewhere to live it's very hard to do your day-to-day business," she said.

"Government money is not enough for public housing and homelessness services; private rental prices are too high and house sale prices are too high," she said. For a single person on Youth Allowance or Newstart, the situation is dire — the snapshot found no affordable properties.A single person on the age pension would only find 122 affordable properties, most of which were share houses.
