The Hellspawn returns

Todd McFarlane has been working for some time to bring his comic book character Spawn to the big screen once again. Now, it looks like he’ll be able to do that, signing with Blumhouse Productions, the company behind recent hit horror films Get Out, Paranormal Activity, The Purge, and Split. McFarlane made the announcement alongside Tusk director Kevin Smith with a Facebook Live video earlier today, saying that the film was no longer theoretical: “we’re now making movies.

In the video, he explained that Smith was working on a show for BBC America, Sam and Twitch, two characters introduced in the original Spawn comics. Mark A.Z. Dippé directed the first Spawn in 1997, with Michael Jai White playing the title role. However, negative reviews meant that a planned sequel was never produced. The character was first introduced in 1992 in Spawn #1, and followed former Force Recon Marine Al Simmons, who was killed and sent to hell.
