Across his six years with STCSA, he shepherded the company through the pandemic, achieved gender parity of writers and directors, and programmed the highest-selling show in its 50-year history: the jukebox musical of Bob Dylan songs, Girl from the North Country."I love bringing great contemporary and international work or re-interrogating classics. But finding new work that speaks to audiences, like The Dictionary of Lost Words, that's the real joy: making new work that touches people.
"The company has such a great track record of bringing artists , like Hugo , Richard , Claudia , Justine Clarke … I'll be making many calls when I'm in the chair to get many of those artists onto our stages," he says. "On stage, we can make peace from crisis. We can make order from entropy. We can look at a current social problem and explore it through the work."Butel wants to have an "open door" for artists to share how they're feeling.
"At the end of the day, we're called the Sydney Theatre Company, which means the medium in which we communicate is through theatre."Butel's love of STC stretches all the way back to 1986 when, aged 16, he saw its production of Stephen Sondheim's Company, directed by founding artistic director Richard Wherrett.
" what you don't have at home on Netflix is the ability to share it with other people. I think that's why the theatre will survive," he says.
