The institution is celebrating 65 years in existence.

Vice Chancellor and Principal Mahlo Mokgalong says the institution prided itself as a breeding ground for student activism during the apartheid era.Mokgalong says the institution also played a role in developing the surrounding area economically.

“The University of Limpopo, University of the North then, played a major role in shaping the future of this country. You know, as students, we used to say when Turfloop sneezes, the whole country will catch the cold and that’s exactly how it is. The philosophy of Black Consciousness emerged here.” She adds: “Last week, we had one of the founders, Professor Pityana. They are the ones who put their heads together at this university, thought through and came up with the philosophy of Black Consciousness, the definition and everything and came up with a student organisation, SASO, which pulled students through.”
