Despite the technology industry experiencing multiple rounds of layoffs and cuts, the Home Team Science and Technology Agency (HTX) continues to hire aggressively and maintain a flexible work model. HTX, marking its fifth-year anniversary, aims to meet the increasing demands in homeland security and has grown to 1,700 employees in 2023.

Mr Joseph Tan, acting director of HTX’s xDigital office, noted the limited pool, but said it is looking beyond just the typical definition of an AI practitioner.

Since announcing its AI push in June, it has built an AI workforce of more than 60 people, with plans to add another 100 in the next few months. It aims to have 300 people by end-2025. HTX’s chief innovation officer Ng Pan Yong said justifying such an investment is sometimes difficult. “It’s not like the private sector, where we can say I put in $10, I’m going to make $15, let’s do it,” he said.

Recruitment and career experts said that while there is still strong demand for AI talent across the tech sector, HTX offers a stable alternative to the volatile job situation in the tech landscape.ST Explains: Why are tech companies in S’pore laying off people?
