Racial Discrimination,Polling Location,Fire Company

The Dauphin County Commissioners voted unanimously to remove the Friendship Fire Company of Bressler as a polling location following an investigation into allegations of racial discrimination.

The Friendship Fire Company of Bressler will no longer serve as a polling location following a unanimous vote by the Dauphin County Commissioners on Dec. 11. The decision comes after an investigation by the Attorney General's Office into allegations of racial discrimination within the fire company and its social club.

Swatara Township Commissioner Tom Connolly, who has been vocal about the issue, said he received a cease and desist letter warning him against making defamatory comments about the fire company.'I took it as this lawyer was trying to intimidate me to not tell the truth,' Connolly said. The fire company closed earlier this year after the investigation was reopened, with multiple individuals coming forward to share their experiences. Until the Dec. 11 commissioners meeting, she was simply an anonymous person in the Attorney General's investigation. 'I have personally experienced the racism at the Bressler club. I was one of the individuals named in the attorney general's report. They are not allegations. They are true, and it happens,' Hicks said during the Dec. 11 commissioners meeting. Another resident, Onah Ossai, has been vocal at previous meetings about their dismay for the fire company serving as a polling spot. 'I understand that some might not understand how somebody might feel trying to go vote in a place that is under investigation and has these allegations. For some of us, it’s a little bit different,' Ossai said at the recent commissioners meeting. Despite the unanimous decision, there was debate among commissioners about the implications of moving the polling location. Commissioner George Hartwick expressed concerns about setting a precedent for changing polling sites based on allegations unrelated to election
