The Forum for Good Governance (FFGG) has expressed support for the arrest of former Kaduna State Commissioner of Finance and Local Government, Mohammed Bashir Sa’idu, on charges of money laundering, criminal breach of trust, and misappropriation of public funds. Sa’idu was arrested and detained at the Kaduna Correctional Centre following a petition alleging he laundered N3.96 billion and misappropriated N244 million between 2015 and 2023.

In a statement released Thursday by its Director, Ahmadu Ibrahim Kauru, FFGG stated that Sa’idu’s arrest was justified, particularly given the allegations of public fund theft. The group cautioned against any attempts by Governor Nasir Elrufai to interfere with the legal process. Highlighting the urgent need to recover lost funds amidst Kaduna State’s significant debt, FFGG emphasized that the arrest should not be politicized. The statement cited allegations of misappropriation, including the sale of $45 million in state-owned foreign currency at an undervalued exchange rate, resulting in a loss of over N3.96 billion to the government. Additionally, Sa’idu is accused of failing to account for proceeds from the sale of government houses in Marafa Estate, Kaduna, totaling approximately N244 million. The statement noted that the Kaduna State House of Assembly had previously investigated Sa’idu’s financial dealings and forwarded its findings to anti-corruption agencies, including the EFCC and ICPC. FFGG expressed satisfaction that the police confirmed the arrest was not politically motivated but based on credible allegations of financial crimes and that Sa’idu will remain in custody pending further investigations
