Opinion | SA is lagging in harnessing the power of technology to boost small business

Ever since the launch of Google, Amazon, Facebook and Uber, a new breed of company has emerged that employs digital technology and entrepreneurship to create disruptive innovations.

The proliferation of new digital technologies, such as cloud computing, blockchain technology, the internet of things and artificial intelligence, has transformed the nature of business and forced individuals to find new ways of dealing with innovation and uncertainty. In turn, this has opened up a host of opportunities at the intersection of digital technologies and entrepreneurship.

For example, we have seen a rise in digital entrepreneurs who, supported by platforms such as Apple iOS, Google’s Android and Facebook, can strategically navigate the complex landscape of linking and adapting to different platforms to ensure entrepreneurial success.

The intersection of digital technologies and entrepreneurship is highly relevant to SA, where high levels of unemployment are prevalent and small business as a whole remains underdeveloped by international and African standards. While SA’s technological infrastructure is considered the most extensive of all African nations, the state of information and communications technology in SA highlights the excessive costs of data on SA’s telecom networks in comparison to other African nations.
