Addressing the Business Council of Australia on Monday, Mr Frydenberg urged companies to shift their focus away from returning extra cash to shareholders.
"To guarantee our living standards continue to rise, and our children have even more opportunities in the future, we must tackle the productivity challenge," he said. "Our productivity growth over the last decade has slowed and we cannot simply rely on high commodity prices to boost national income."
