Amid growing conversations about healthy diets, veganism and plant-based proteins, how does red meat stay on consumers' plates?

Supplied: Meat and Livestock AustraliaThe Australian red meat industry is facing challenging times, with attention growing around healthy diets, veganism and plant-based proteins. How do they also increase the appetite for meat when some consumers are turning their backs due to environmental and welfare concerns?

Those issues dominated at this week's Meat and Livestock Australia Red Meat Conference in Tamworth, where researchers, analysts and producers shared their insights into how the sector could move with a changing marketplace. What now plays an even bigger role in selling Australian-grown meat is provenance; the origin of the animal on your plate.

It has become increasingly important to consumers to know the story of how an animal was produced, where it was produced, that it was treated humanely and came from an environmentally conscious operation. Sharing the narrative of the products is becoming more difficult, particularly as veganism grows and animal activists become more vocal through protests and social media.

Emu and kangaroo please.

As someone who thinks tomato sauce counts as a serving of vegetables, I wish they wouldn't. It's not about eating a dead animal or destroying the planet and the science is very clear as to which is better for all concerned.

Two stakes for $12.00 is a great deal. Long Live Beef. 🥰

Meat eaters are like climate changr activists and flat earthers...they all ignore the science

It's delicious and you don't make friends with salad.

'Provenance' of meat ffs Sanitarium have been making vegetarian products for decades. Does anyone know where the beans, soya, beets, laboratory grown fungus etc actually come from? Anyone? Provenance my arse.

Let me tell you why the plant - people are pushing this on to others: Notize the ramp - up of late ? Coincidence ? No chance . If you don’t eat meat , if makes you more passive ( pliant , push - aroundable etc )

Propaganda statement , as usual by the ABC pushing politics . INVERTED statement . ( up side down ) it’s the vegan industry that is fighting . Why? Why are they fighting anything ? Just eat plant crap if want to !

Bowel cancer is fun.

Won't be hard Michael the plant based meat still needs animal blood to grow & don't believe the dripping red blood is SUPPOSEDLY from a plant? There's no plant I know of that has red sap. And I've heard they're not very tasty either

Vegans to get me to give up meat? Yeah! Pigs can fly too.

You can’t fight cults - they’re not logic-based

I find it very difficult to eat red meat. The longer you don't eat it, the harder it is to even want to eat it. What began as a solo protest against live cattle and sheep trade has become a way of life. Cannot even stand in a kitchen with the smell of cooked red meat now.

With an ever World wide exploding population meat is going to become an expensive commodity forcing many towards other proteins such as legumes etc and even insects (sudder the thought).

Little bit upside down, the meat industry is not an answer to veganism, quite the opposite. The meat industry's biggest fight at the moment is affordability for the majority in drought conditions - almost nothing to do with pleading minorities such as veganism.

More ABC journavism

You'd think the red meat industry has a bigger fight on its hands against those who are cutting down on red meat because of the science that shows eating large amounts of red meat is unhealthy. Their main competition is poultry and fish - veganism is a sideshow.

No one is needing to fight veganism idiots

Meat Is real food fake meat is not real food

Hmmmm this or a piece of kale Your call

Seriously. You honestly think real Australians are going to stop eating meat. Something they love to eat and have enjoyed all their life, because some idiot fringe group bang on about some vegies. These flogs have to make noise while we just go about life.

Just wait it out. You can only eat so many plants before you turn to meet

The meat industry doesn't need to fight anything, it doesn't need to sell or convince...it's the other way around.

As a vegetarian myself I say people can eat what they want

VEGANISM IS NOT HEALTHY.

If we’re going to get serious about climate change and water conservation we need to stop farming and exploiting animals.
