Opinion | Social media superstars are sucking up all the political donations, leaving smaller candidates with nothing. But there's a way to end this fundraising inequality. By blairreeves

You may think this is great news for Democrats. And for a few candidates, it is. But not for most. The reason has to do with where much of the new money is coming from: small dollar contributors on the internet, which increasingly means social media.

The winner-take-all dynamics of the internet don't mesh well with our majoritarian system of government. Indeed, this growing trend in Democratic fundraising threatens to harm the party's ability to build progressive political power for two big reasons. On social media, state representatives in critical races are massively overshadowed by very safe national candidates with enormous audiences who are asking for donors' money. Donors can only give money to the candidates they know about, and those are typically the ones who have won the hunger games of social media news feed algorithms.

With public trust in both parties at an all-time nadir, it's unlikely that this candidate "discoverability" problem will be solved by the parties themselves. Both parties are addicted to corporate PAC money and major donors . "Big, structural change," as they say, will have to come from outside the system. And our organization has some ideas.
