A Trade official says the informal sector's formalization will allow workers to be part of the state registry and ensure they are given cash support, avoiding a repeat of what happened to wage subsidy distribution efforts last year.

," said Trade Director Jerry Clavesillas as he recounted the government's wage subsidy distribution efforts last year."So ibig sabihin, hindi po sila parang ano, legitimately recorded."

[Translation: Most of our informal sector weren't able to avail simply because they're not in the registry. They're not on the list. So this means it appears they're not legitimately recorded.] The Finance and Labor departments handed out wage subsidies to workers displaced by the pandemic last year as the country went into strict quarantine measures. The DOF focused on personnel of micro, small and medium enterprises badly hit by the health crisis in particular.

The DOLE, meanwhile, continues to provide financial aid for laborers affected by stricter lockdowns, triggered this time around by the alarming surge in infections observed the past weeks. Clavesillas noted the formalization of the informal sector will help avoid a repeat of past occurrences when the industry's workers weren't able to receive any form of cash assistance.
