A multimillion-dollar funding program to support the live music sector has come under fire for providing money to venues owned by some of Sydney’s largest hospitality and entertainment companies | smh_andrew

, as part of a $200 million spending spree on pubs and venues in NSW and Victoria.

Tourism Minister Stuart Ayres said the $24 million program was “incredibly popular” among the state’s live music venues and was a “targeted response” in tune with industry needs. Paddo RSL general manager Ross Lamb said he was shocked to find out Crowbar, a music venue in Leichhardt, had been awarded $600,000 while his Paddington venue missed out. Mr Lamb said he also did not understand why venues owned by large businesses were given public funding.

Venues were required to show they had a significant live music program prior to the impact of COVID-19 restrictions and demonstrate financial distress to qualify forBut venues with pokies, certain types of liquor licenses or owned by government or education providers may have been ineligible.Other large companies that received funding under the live music support program include the Australian Venue Co., which owns Bungalow 8, and Event Hospitality & Entertainment.

paintsandsings _andrew John Graham is right. Gemmed is notorious for underpaying his staff and rubbing shoulders with the likes of Cash and Scotty from carpeting. The idle rich rule. What a principless cur he is. Up there with Gerry Harvey.

_andrew Why was Hemmes in Parliament House Canberra on budget night ..according to unverified photos I saw on social media. Seems if you lend your grand home for Liberal party fundraisers …you surely expect something. Am I right or wrong on that JoshFrydenberg JEChalmers ? Auspol

randlight _andrew auspol Yes & govt needs to look at the fact that most of our radio stations have agreements/contracts that enforce the playing of mostly American music on our radio stations instead of playing & supporting home grown music!

_andrew 'Commercial in Confidence' Was that a quote from Gladys's personal paper shredder?

_andrew We must be doing alright then. No masses of Covid-19 cases. No war within our country. Time to enjoy life?

_andrew The journalist omitted to state that another criterion for the lucrative 'Tier 1' grants was that the venue provided 'ticketed' events - in other words, sold tickets to its live music events. Of course, the criterion may have been overlooked by the assessors.🤔 Funny about that.
