“Sudden and tragic was the death of Mr. William R. Arnold, managing director of the Dominion Trust Company of this city,” the Vancouver World reported on Oct. 13, 1914. “It was while handling a shotgun, which he had recently used on a hunting expedition, that Mr. Arnold was shot in the heart. He died a few moments later.”

The company had $970,715.97 in assets, but $3 million in liabilities, which meant people who had deposited their money with Dominion Trust were unlikely to get it all back.

But it isn’t true – Helyer died of a heart attack or stroke on a streetcar in 1919. The Helyer myth probably spun out of “a horrifying plunge” taken by construction worker John Tate on Nov. 11, 1909.
