White House press secretary Jen Psaki’s comments fell short of endorsing “Sami’s Law,” named for Samantha Josephson of Robbinsville, killed in 2019 after getting into a car she thought was her Uber.

“Sami’s Law will protect riders by requiring instant verification that the driver is legitimate before the ride commences, end fake Uber and Lyft signage by predators in cars, and will promote more effective background checks of drivers,” Smith said.

Samantha Josephson was a senior at the University of South Carolina when she entered a car she thought was the ride share she had ordered. Instead, she was kidnapped and killed. The driver, Nathaniel Rowland,Uber’s head of safety communications, Andrew Hasbun, said in a statement that all trips are tracked through GPS, all drivers must undergo a background check and riders receive the make, model, license plate and name of the driver in advance.

“Uber has pioneered many of the safety features that are standard in the industry today, including an in-app emergency button, and introduced two brand new features just last month,” Hasbun said. “Our work on safety is never done, and we are committed to working with relevant stakeholders and officials at all levels of government to help ensure rider and driver safety on every trip.”

Lyft spokeswoman Ashley Adams said in a statement: “Safety is fundamental to Lyft, which is why we’re always investing in new features and policies to protect drivers and riders. We will continue to work with safety experts as we seek to tackle complex issues and enhance safety across the transportation industry.”on Capitol Hill and have met with administration officials, but their request for a meeting with President Joe Biden so far has gone unanswered.
