Workers at an REI store in New York City have filed to form a union. If they are successful, the store would be the first of the outdoor recreation equipment company’s 168 locations and 15,000 employees to do so.

It’s unlikely that the company will simply allow the workers to unionize without an election, however. Workers say the union is necessary due to unsafe working conditions for employees amid the pandemic. Additionally, there has been “a tangible shift in the culture at work that doesn’t seem to align with the values that brought most of us here,”

A union on one site seems not well placed to confront the company. As a minimum it should extend to all the company's facilities and preferably wider to encompass that entire business sector.
