At least five Eritreans were killed when gunmen attacked a refugee camp in Ethiopia’s northeastern Afar region during fighting between rebellious Tigrayan and Afar forces in the area on 3 February, the UNHCR said on Friday.

A tank damaged during the fighting between Ethiopia's National Defense Force and Tigray Special Forces stands on the outskirts of Humera town in Ethiopia July 1, 2021.

Refugees told UNHCR that armed men attacked the camp, kidnapped several women, looted property, and occupied their homes, causing thousands to flee. The conflict in northern Ethiopia has pitted the rulers of the northern region of Tigray against the Ethiopian central government and its allies – including forces from the regions of Amhara and Afar, and troops from the neighboring nation of Eritrea.

It is very sad to hear when unarmed, innocent, Eritrean refugees become a target. UNHCR needs to repatriate all Eritrea refugees from Ethiopia as soon as possible. Refugee rights are human rights! antonioguterres
