Cardinals owner Michael Bidwill explains why the team parted ways with the Renaissance in Glendale. NFL phoenix

For a city to even get a Super Bowl it requires a massive commitment from dozens of hotels across the area, a move that can be costly to properties — and sometimes controversial.

While there are roughly 69,000 hotel rooms in the metro, the majority would be coming from the 40 full-service properties. The top properties were required to give up 80% of their inventory so the NFL or its partners feel like they completely have the property and can come in and put up decorations and signage.

For the past two Super Bowls held in Glendale, Bidwill said the Renaissance, which has 320 rooms, had also not committed to previous games and was hopeful that this time the hotel’s new management, Atrium Hospitality, would get on board. Edwards argues that having the opportunity to host executives from top national and international companies could be a huge benefit for Valley hotels and if the executives have the right experience, they are likely to come back.

The Renaissance said in October that it has agreed to set aside a Super Bowl block of rooms, but declined to comment further about its agreement with the Super Bowl or contract for the Cardinals summer training camp headquarters.
