More veterans launched new businesses in 2021. Here's what industries they chose.

There has been a surge of new businesses formed since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, and military veterans have played a big role in the jump.

“Last year. we saw the opening of the doors of entrepreneurship to groups that have been left out of new business ownership,” said Gusto Economist Luke Pardue, stressing Black and Hispanic business owners surged during the pandemic. “We are seeing this with veterans as well.” Additionally, the share of Black entrepreneurs who launched businesses also rose from 3% in 2019 to 9% in 2021, according to Gusto's survey.

Veterans didn’t start new businesses in the same sectors that nonveterans did though. Veterans were far more likely to start businesses in goods-producing sectors such as construction, manufacturing, utilities warehousing and transportation, with 47% starting businesses in those sectors, according to Gusto. Just 11% of nonveterans started businesses in those sectors.
