Company fined for cutting down 100 trees in south Nanaimo without a permit

The violation happened last spring, and neighbour Mindy Bourne brought the land clearing to the city’s attention when she felt something wasn’t right.

The city recently reached a consent agreement with Top Down Investments, the company that owns the land, and levied a penalty of $500 per tree, which is the minimum fine under the city’s bylaw. “We understand there was an element of ignorance or lack of awareness of requirements. As well the individual was cooperative.”

Intentional. Fine is less than a permit; and always a yes.

Excessive development fees and fines. Whether justified or not is one of the reasons housing is so expensive.

Seize the property.

Fines are just the price of doing business. People seem to have no morals anymore. 😔

they cut them down because the fines are so small it doesn't even become a hesitation for them, it's that simple.

That fine is a JOKE. Makes one feel completely helpless and hopeless in the face of all the tree cutting that’s taking place on this island. Shameful really to have such gorgeous nature and absolutely destroy it nanaimo

A journalist would include the fact that Top Down Investments' other 2 Nanaimo properties are being flaunted at a 1.2+ Million profit. Might be relevant information for the public to know. 50k is nothing to these arrogant 'developers'. What a joke our systems are.
