2022 brought the culmination of a long-awaited dream of the Jacksonville Port Authority, with the $420 million harbor deepening project officially wrapping up in May.
The deepening brought the port to the same depth as the Savannah Harbor, one of the busiest in the U.S. for Asian trade. Following the project, volume and efficiency at the port have both increased, according to Green. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers deepened the 11-mile channel from the Atlantic Ocean to the Blount Island Marine Terminal, which ultimately created and protected thousands of jobs in trucking, distribution and warehousing.
