Ministers want to 'make polluters pay', after more than 300,000 waste spills in England's waterways last year.

Water companies could face unlimited fines for dumping sewage, under government plans expected to be announced in the coming days.

This represented a 19% decrease from 2021 - but the Environment Agency put the drop largely down to drier weather, rather than the actions of water companies. Water UK, which represents the water industry, said this was the fourth year that spill figures had come down, and that firms were "committed to building on this positive news".Sewage entered rivers and seas 825 times a day

Currently, such money goes to the Treasury - but the plans will see money instead funnelled to the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs . Responding to Friday's figures on sewage spills, Labour said the government had allowed waterways to be treated as "open sewers".

Good. And make them hefty. Polluting our seas with raw sewage is not acceptable at any price

fine them billions! then give it to the people to help with the economic crisis. they've sh*t on us for far too long.

April Fools...we still have a Tory government

The result of those finds will be passed on to the consumer or taken from the budget for the repairs to the water and sewage system. Place bans on bonus and dividends, fines directly to the directors and top management.

Did not T Coffee know this on the head a couple of weeks ago? All the propaganda coming out for L trying very hard to loose may local election.

UNPOPULAR OPINION: Whilst we value a dollar more than; - our health - our education - our environment ... nothing we do will *save-the-planet* from our stupidity?

ofwat the conservatives funded and supporting quango will never follow through. If it does the fines will be minimal siting the usual 🐂💩 ‘they need to invest in infrastructure’.

Water rate be going up then.

And who will be paying the fines, let me think for a moment, We will when our bills go up

Just passing cost on to public, should be a criminal offence.

If I were to urinate in public i would most likely be arrested. This is beyond unacceptable. Can some one remind me how many billions are being made by these companies?

April Fool right?

There probably wouldn't have been much investment in these utilities even if they were still government run 🙄.....

There is no excuse in the 21st century for pouring raw sewage into our waterways and seas. I bet the Victorians would have dealt with it. Water companies should clean up their act or be nationalised

Unlimited fines when they can make unlimited profit? Get in the bin. Prison sentences please, including for the charlatans making up these rules.

Fining won't stop sewage dumping because there's no alternative until billions is spent on improving and building new sewers, profits should go on this not shareholders, no new sewers built during 40 years of privatisation

Not before time. Utilities have been putting profits before performance for many years.

They make so much profit they'll probably just pay the fine. 🤷

We live in the UK FFS “Companies are allowed to discharge untreated sewage into rivers in exceptional circumstances - for example, during heavy rainfall”

Which they then pass on to customers in increased bills. Genius

And “Unlimited” Profits with NO investment 🤷‍♂️ A F great idea by Tories to have them privatised to make rich mates richer whilst we get dumped on …our beaches 😡🤷‍♂️

And who pays the fines we do they just put the price of the bills up they don't care private company scumbags

Which will be passed onto the consumer...
