Alaska Gov. Mike Dunleavy signs legislation that would allow the state to set up a carbon offset program. Dunleavy signed the bill Tuesday with Alaska lawmakers and administration officials standing behind him during the Alaska Sustainable Energy Conference at the Dena'ina Civic and Convention Center in downtown Anchorage.
“This bill is going to allow us now to have conversations worldwide with individuals involved in the carbon market. Just like oil, just like gas, just like our timber, this is a commodity that can be monetized now,” he said. “What’s just not clear is what that market would look like and whether or not purchasers ... will find that an attractive investment,” he said. “That’s the leap of faith.”
“I think that in order to get capital investment into our state, we are going to have to be perceived in a way that is trying to work through all of this,” she said during the recent legislative debate. It could be several years before the first credit sales occur because of the time it will take to set up a program and develop or vet projects.
