Top Rope now brews craft beer from its site in Bootle

When Ben Jackson set up a brewery in his mum and dad's garden, they had no real option but to get involved.

They spoke to the ECHO about how their project grew from the kitchen to one of Merseyside's most recognisable breweries, with beer found behind the bar at pubs across the region. "After a heavy night, I asked my parents how they would feel about having a brewery in the garden. We'd build a shed and get it set up, it was like a proof of concept.

Ben said: "We went to Liverpool Beer Festival in the summer and we had to brew for six weeks solid, brewing three times a week just to make enough beer to sell at the festival. We were brewing 100 litres at a time so we were constantly sold out. We needed to make more beer. "We were then in North Wales, it was lovely. It was a really nice part of the world but we always wanted to move back towards Liverpool. Driving 40 minutes to get to North Wales each day was a bit of an ache.

"Now being local, we're able to offer more support to those businesses. A lot of bars, restaurants and pubs are very keen to support local. That's down to the people of Liverpool as well, people want to drink local beer. "I got into craft beer in about 2010 when it was really booming - there was this sense of adventure and excitement, with all these new flavours. Every time you went out for a beer, it was a new experience. The industry has matured a lot since then. It had to in a lot of ways, but it lost some of that frontier feeling.
