WESTMOUNT, N.S. — When Candice Mugford’s daughter Emma got braces last winter, she couldn’t enjoy her favourite chewy candies. So Candice started freeze-drying them.“I never, ever thought that Sobeys and Needs was . They said it’s a big production to get into Sobeys. I told my husband ‘I’m not going to be able to do that. It’s way too much.
She freeze-dries 23 different kinds of candy, including Fruit Roll-Ups, banana marshmallows and — a family favourite — Skittles. Depending on the type of candy, Mugford will freeze-dry it for up to 48 hours when it achieves its crunchy, airy quality. Then, it’s done.Mugford delegated most of the packing tasks to Emma.
“It’s a very long, stretched-out process. You have to have certain paperwork. There’s a lot of people involved and teams for everything .” Hitting other stores in the region is next on Mugford’s list. She’s working to ramp up production to meet the stores’ demands. Right now, she’s also handling all shipping herself.“I want it to be across Canada. But as of now, while we could ship through Atlantic Canada, we’re just kind of slow out of the gate. We don’t want to rush it out and not be able to produce the candy well.”
