As part of a bid to gain access for Irish beef to South Korean markets, Agriculture Minister Charlie McConalogue travelled to the Majang Meat Market and visited a leading Korean meat processor in Seoul.

If Agriculture Minister Charlie McConalogue thought he had a meaty job on his hands convincing Korean suppliers that they should sell Irish beef, Irish luck struck on his visit to Seoul’s meat district on Wednesday.

One of the main objectives of the Irish Government’s trade mission to South Korea is to provide market access to Irish beef. He was told that the next time he visited his daughter, a visit to a farm and a meat factory could be arranged so he could see how the Irish beef market works. As he walked around the stalls in Korea’s largest meat market, the different cuts of beef, pork and other meats and how they are consumed by the Koreans were explained to him.

The beef in the market is not the same as you would see on a supermarket shelf in Ireland. It has a marbled effect due to the fact the animals are fed grains.“Irish products are a different product and that is why it travels and sells so well,” he explained. “We're hopeful, not just in relation to the engagement and my presence here, but the fact that as a country we’ve such a strong presence of Cabinet ministers here, that the visit this week and that presence will help move things forward.”
