An employee at the Hong Kong office of a multinational company transferred nearly $26 million to scammers last month after unwittingly attending a video call with deepfakes of their co-workers ― including the company’s chief financial officer.

After the initial video conference, which included a convincing facsimile of the company’s U.K.-based CFO, the scammers followed up via instant messages, email, and additional one-on-one video calls. The employee only realized it was a scam after independently contacting the company’s head office about a week later.
