Disappointing earnings from the market’s heavyweights could give investors less reason to hold stocks. Meta Platforms, whose shares have jumped over 40 per cent in 2024, is due on Wednesday, while Alphabet and Microsoft, which are logging year-to-date gains of about 12 per cent and 7.5 per cent respectively, are set for yesterday.
“It appears that the expectations are that they’re really going to deliver again,” said Patrick Kaser, portfolio manager at Brandywine Global. “And so the risk to me is skewed to the downside.”
