Animal welfare advocates have claimed the powers of the investigation into greyhound racing are ‘inadequate’ to address allegations of rampant animal abuse.Animal welfare advocates have claimed the powers of the investigation into greyhound racing are ‘inadequate’ to address allegations of rampant animal abuse.

Speaking publicly for the first time since his report was made public, Brittan said the best chance of meaningful change would come from an inquiry independent of GWIC. It should hold public hearings and release its findings, he said.“GWIC are conducting the inquiry into GRNSW and themselves,” he said. “As such this would appear to be an internal inquiry.”

GRNSW has welcomed the inquiry, with its acting chief executive, Wayne Billett, praising Drake as “one of Australia’s most respected and distinguished investigators”. Brittan said under the terms of his contract with GRNSW he was forbidden from discussing anything he learned while he was chief vet unless he had approval from the peak body.
