Sales at the cheap chic retailer Target have gotten hit as consumers buy less discretionary merchandise.

Target could get a boost from back-to-school and its recent decision to cut prices on thousands of everyday items, such as milk, diapers and paper towels.will report quarterly earnings on Wednesday as the retailer tries to make a comeback from a prolonged period of weaker sales and profits.
