Meet Edizemi Onilenla, the woman who’s tasty African food is taking Ireland by storm - here, she explains what it was like moving to Ireland and how she built up her business

When Edizemi Onilenla took the leap from working full-time as a social worker to starting her own food business, she wasn’t sure where the journey would take her. Now, she’s happy to say she’s achieving her dream of bringing African cuisine to the forefront of the Irish food scene.

She became really passionate about making African – and particularly Nigerian – food accessible in Ireland, the same way other culture’s food is readily available here. “I gave some to my friends and some to African stores. People were buying it and my Irish friends loved it. This gave me confidence to expand.”

The Mama Shee brand has grown to include unique spice blends and has also expanded into more stores. “The aim of the programme was to promote Irish business and give them the opportunity to sell their products in a big space, like SuperValu stores. I have achieved my goal of bringing African food to a wider audience,” Edizemi says.

Mama Shee’s growth in popularity has also seen Edizemi and her staff sell food at festivals like Wellfest, Taste Of Dublin and the Africa Day Festival. Her family were also very supportive of her dreams and one of her sons works for the business, and Edizemi says his generation has helped Mama Shee grow.
