President Joe Biden’s long-delayed trip to Africa was overshadowed by his controversial pardon of his son Hunter. The visit had many of the hallmarks of a traditional state visit, including a cannon salute, celebratory music and photo opportunities.

President Joe Biden shakes hands with President Felix Tshisekedi of the Democratic Republic of the Congo during the Lobito Corridor Trans-Africa Summit at the Carrinho food processing factory near Lobito, Angola, on Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2024. President Joe Biden accompanied by his son Hunter Biden and his grandson Beau leave a book store as they walk in downtown Nantucket Mass., Friday, Nov. 29, 2024.

Biden said in a statement explaining the pardon that, while he believed in the justice system, he also felt that politics had infected the cases against his son and “enough was enough.” Jean-Pierre maintained that he wasn’t trying to have it both ways. She also bristled when it was suggested that such complaints about the Department of Justice smacked of President-elect Donald Trump’s“The United States is all in on Africa,”

But Biden leaves office on Jan. 20, and Lourenço, like many leaders of African nations, has already begun suggesting that he’s looking toward a Trump-dominated future.
