Former Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy on Thursday criticized American culture for prioritizing 'mediocrity over excellence,' arguing that this has negatively affected the tech industry. Ramaswamy, who will soon co-head the new Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), stated in a lengthy X post that such cultural values lead tech companies to 'often hire foreign-born & first-generation engineers over 'native' Americans.
' He urged Americans to confront this 'truth,' emphasizing that 'tough questions demand tough answers.' Ramaswamy claimed that 'a culture that celebrates the prom queen over the math olympiad champ, or the jock over the valedictorian, will not produce the best engineers.' He further illustrated his point by referencing popular television shows like 'Boy Meets World,' 'Saved by the Bell,' and 'Family Matters,' suggesting that their narratives promote mediocrity. Ramaswamy, whose parents immigrated to the U.S., shared that he knows 'multiple sets of immigrant parents' who restricted their children's viewing of these shows precisely because they perceived them as promoting mediocrity. He acknowledged that 'most normal American parents look skeptically at 'those kinds of parents,'' and 'More normal American kids view such 'those kinds of kids' with scorn.' He argued that aspiring to 'normalcy' will only result in achieving 'normalcy.' He concluded, '“'Normalcy' doesn’t cut it in a hyper-competitive global market for technical talent. And if we pretend like it does, we’ll have our a---- handed to us by China,' The sentiments drew criticism from Republican former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, who asserted 'there is nothing wrong with American workers or American culture.'
