Parliament says it is the constitutional obligation for ministers to comply and answer written questions posed by MPs on time.Parliament spokesperson Moloto Mothapo says all the questions that are not answered yet are still within the prescribed time frame set for them to be answered.
Mothapo says, “In the National Assembly, a total of 2793 questions were posed to members of the Cabinet comprising 2475 written questions and 318 oral questions. Of these oral questions 12 were directed to the President and another 12 to the Deputy President.” He says, “So in terms of responses in the National Assembly, 1801 written questions and 285 oral questions were answered. Some questions that have not yet been responded to are still within the prescribed period as outlined in the assembly rules. While the response rate reflects a commitment to accountability, it also underscores the importance of ensuring timely and comprehensive answers to all parliamentary questions.
The Office of Deputy President Paul Mashatile, in his capacity as the leader of government business, says the official deadline for ministers to submit their written parliamentary answers is January 9.
