Starbucks confirmed it is closing a store in a prime location for good.

On Tuesday, the company told KOMO News that it has pulled out of the store on the corner of 1st and Pike, right across from Pike Place Market.

In a statement, a company spokesperson confirmed, “As a standard course of business, we regularly evaluate our store portfolio to determine how we can best meet our community and customers’ needs and ensure partners are supported in crafting beverages in a warm and welcoming environment. We look forward to continuing to serve the community and visitors at our other nearby locations, including the original store at 1912 Pike Place and 1st and University.

However, the company has previously brought up public safety concerns for stores in the downtown Seattle core as reasons for closures. The Westlake Center location, just off Westlake Park, was closed in 2022. Critics have claimed Starbucks has made some of the moves to fight off unionization efforts. However, the website for “Starbucks Workers United” did not list the 1st and Pike locations as a union store.

“We just saw the for sale signs that went up, and we were like, 'Oh my gosh, it's like, actually real,'” said Deanna Cunningham, who manages the Seattle Shirt Company directly across the street, and says she heard the concerns outside. “The main focus is to have your customers feel comfortable, and if that isn't happening, even if they are busy, it's so many tourists that that's their first interaction with Starbucks sometimes, and I understand that can deter people.
