The US Department of Defense has added Chinese tech giant Tencent to its annual list of “Chinese military companies”. While inclusion doesn’t automatically result in a ban, it raises concerns about Tencent’s potential ties to China’s military. Tencent, known for its WeChat messaging platform and gaming services, maintains its inclusion is an error and plans to appeal. The PLA could potentially leverage Tencent’s ubiquitous platform and cloud services for its modernization and defense efforts.

The US Department of Defense has added Chinese messaging and gaming Tencent to its list of “Chinese military company”, a designation that won’t necessarily result in a ban but is nonetheless unpleasant.

However, it’s not hard to see how China’s military could rely on Tencent, whose WeChat messaging platform and related payment service are both utterly ubiquitous in Chinese daily life. WeChat is also thought to be a key channel Beijing uses to deliver its desired messages to the Chinese diaspora.
