'Skelmersdale is not known as a tourist hot spot so to bring in millions of pounds to the area and creating jobs, is hugely beneficial to the local economy.'

A dad-of-two who wowed after 'one of the best pitches' seen on Dragon's Den is to expand his successful glamping business.

Appearing on Dragon's Den, The Secret Garden won £100,000 investment from entrepreneur Deborah Meaden, in return for a five per cent share in the business. After putting the money to good use and reaping the successes of his business, Derry has bought a second site, La Mancha Hall. "It’s has been there for hundreds of years and there is no way you can recreate that fantastic history – the formal gardens alone have been there for 200 years – and you couldn’t replicate it with all the money in the world, so we’re very lucky to have been able to buy such an amazing site. The house hasn’t been touched since the 1970s, so we’re going to get that grade II-listed buildingback to how it should look.

Derry's business arose from completing DIY projects at home during the coronavirus pandemic and created The Secret Garden's first site - in his own backyard - with children Sophia and Noah who were aged eight and five at the time. He spent £6,500 transforming their overgrown garden, adding a decking area, hot tub, hanging chair, log cabin and a fire pit.

"I wouldn’t be able to have that if I was travelling around the country all the time. I love where I live and don’t want to move, so I started looking for a new site in the area.
