After the wildfires — lessons on being prepared | SaltWire #wildfire #novascotia #thinkingoutoudST. GEORGE'S, N.L. — He’s the town’s mayor these days, but Conrad White remembers people mentioning a salt deposit in and around St. George’s when he was a kid.

“That’s a big plus. There will be jobs in the mine, but there will be spinoffs as well with all the companies used to service the mine.”It will mean more revenue for the town’s coffers eventually too, though nothing has been worked out yet in terms of how the mine will contribute. Often, major industries will pay a grant in lieu of taxes instead of a business tax, but White said all that will be determined in due time.

The project was conditionally released from the provincial environmental assessment process on April 19. The mine will produce barely any carbon emissions as all the equipment and vehicles will operate on electricity and battery power.“The mine will produce the same emissions per year as about four Newfoundland families of four would produce from everyday life.”The mine is expected to produce 2.5 million tonnes of salt, primarily for use as road salt, annually.

“We’re hoping this kind of development will help keep some of our younger kids here and not have to leave for Ontario, Alberta, B.C., or wherever to work."Federico believes this helped move the project through the environmental assessment process relatively easily.
