The city has announced a program to help find the horses new homes

A horse-drawn carriage rides past the Notre Dame cathedral in Old Montreal on May 18, 2016.

Coun. Sterling Downey said the voluntary program will ensure owners have options other than sending their horses to slaughter when the caleches are taken off the roads. When asked if $1,000 was enough to compensate owners for the loss of their livelihood, Downey pointed out that the program was voluntary.

Hope these beautiful animal can be saved.

Long overdue. I once saw a horse hit the ground and then beaten by the driver. In hindsight, I should have gotten off the bus and thrashed the driver, but I didn’t. Will always regret it.

I bet there a nice glue factory somewhere that'll take 'em in.
