Gurnah says the sense of shared humanity should guide the understanding of justice.

Delivering the 22nd Nelson Mandela Lecture at Wits University in Johannesburg on Saturday afternoon, Gurnah says the sense of shared humanity should guide the understanding of justice and inspire the world to pursue justice beyond the borders of respective communities and countries.

“When we watch and read about the distraction and deaths in Gaza, it seems impossible how this tragedy and injustice will end. It seems Israel leaders are not yet done. In this respect, I applaud the actions of the South African government to take the case to the International Court of Justice and to invite greater condemnation of these tragic events.”

Meanwhile, the former first lady, Graça Machel delivering her message for the Nelson Mandela Foundation has urged the world citizens to be in solidarity with each other and fight global challenges. “In a world ravaged by conflicts and oppression and facing climate crisis and growing imperatives for human migration the search for social bonding is of critical importance. It is time for solidarity,” she says.
