Township officials are hoping a private entity will take over the building envelope space although nothing has been finalized.

more of a destination by bringing in a private entity to enhance the park possibly with something like a period-themed tavern or brewery. At this point, a brewery or anything else is just an idea, but the subdivision of the property gets the ball rolling.

“At that time, we put out bids for the demolition of the buildings due to safety concerns around those structures,” the township said in a statement provided to PennLive. “We received bids but decided not to move forward due to concerns from the public and specifically from the Friends of Fort Halifax. We put a stay on demolition and formed a committee to research next steps.”

Township officials say that they met with representatives multiple times from Dauphin County, the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, the Friends of Fort Halifax, the Pennsylvania Conservancy, and state representatives and senators. Officials say that a potential sale would not restrict access to the river as the township is proposing a public/private parking area to the north end of the building envelope with an extension down to the camp area and kayak launch area.

“In principle, we care more about the project possibility than about any profit from sale of the land,” township officials said.“It will split the Building Envelope from the rest of the park so that the township can sell it as a “business opportunity”, the organization said on its Facebook page.
