Kids area is deck 12 with no windows. This is deck 11 the pool deck area next to the bar where it happened. Get on the ship yourself and you will see the grandfather messed up.

From the photos it seems the grandfather found the only open window. It’s really difficult to mistake, in my experience, a thick pane of safety glass for an open window.
