ICYMI: Non-smokers at U.K. company rewarded 4 extra vacation days a year

dated Jan. 2 that they were “proud to incentivize” their staff to quit smoking and to “create a healthy workplace” within their offices.

Bryden said he was inspired by an article he saw last year about a Japanese firm that was considering giving non-smoking employees up to six extra days of holiday a year, and wanted to bring that idea to his company. “I noticed some of our non-smoking guys were sitting there working without taking any breaks, and some of our smokers having two, three, four, five cigarettes a day,” Bryden said. “Why not reward the healthier behaviour?”

“It’s gone down fantastically within my company, to the extent that people are asking me to help them quit [smoking],” he said.

Couldn’t happen in Canada, we’d have the discrimination brigade hauling them to court before you had 1 extra day off.

Makes sense. A worker taking one (1) 10 minute cigarette break per day adds up to a total of almost 42 hours over a year, based on a 8 hour day, 5 day week, 50 week per year work schedule.

Yay! Let’s celebrate health! smokefree

I like this idea. Kind of makes up for all the extra breaks smokers take. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

I once worked in a job where the smokers (most staff) were outside at least every hr to smoke. A non-smoking co-worker decided that we were going start taking 'smoking breaks' to even things out a little. Seems enforcing break times would be more effective.

Nicotine addition

Yay! Discrimination is legal again!

I think that is great, but, of course, the argument starts about the morbidly obese, skydivers, travelling to risky locals etc.
