From Amazon to Palantir, Silicon Valley is obsessed with 'Lord of the Rings' — but critics say that the tech industry is missing the point

As Bosworth wrestled to explain his logic to the rest of the company, he reached for an analogy that the entirety of Silicon Valley was sure to understand. a memo first leaked to the New York Times. The series has enraptured high-ranking tech billionaires like Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos and Facebook board member Peter Thiel. Bezos is even said to have gottenbased on "Lord of the Rings," in a deal that's said to be valued at $250 million.

That's particularly evident when it comes to Thiel, one of President Donald Trump's most prominent supporters in the tech industry. Thiel is a cofounder of Palantir and, through his Founders Fund, a major investor in Anduril. Both startups are named in honor of LOTR — the Palantir is a powerful seeing stone, used by the wizard Saruman, while Anduril is named for the magical sword of series hero Aragorn.
