Facebook warned of threats to innovation and freedom of expression, ahead of the release of a raft of rules by the European Union

BRUSSELS - EU industry commissioner Thierry Breton said on Monday it was for Facebook to adapt to Europe’s standards, not the other way round, as he criticized the U.S. social media giant’s proposed internet rules as insufficient.

“It’s not for us to adapt to this company, it’s for this company to adapt to us,” Breton, a former CEO at French telecoms provider Orange and French technology company Atos, told reporters after the meeting.Breton also said he would decide by the end of the year whether to adopt tough rules as part of the digital services act to regulate online platforms and set out their responsibilities.

“Facebook cannot push away all the responsibility. Facebook and Mr Zuckerberg have to answer themselves a question ‘who do they want to be’ as a company and what values they want to promote,” she said in a statement.

Regulate the fuck out of him.

It’s about time that FB recognizes they don’t have the luxury of dictating to any government, foreign or domestic..

Oh dear, what a shame.

If Facebook can't innovate without being the spies they are, TS!

EU? realDonaldTrump... Ugggh Mark Zuckerberg is straight prince Charles (fascist) loyalist: why do you think after I stated My three grandfather kings, Mark then began sending all My info to England aka prince Charles.

Should read 'Facebook warns of threat to it's bottom line if EU regulations come into play'

I don't like Zuckerberg but agree the EU is far too trigger happy when it comes to killing free expression for brownie points. Not taking sides yet but definitely glad the UK is able to set its own agenda in such areas.

“Innovations” like not removing political ads that are patently false, monetizing facial recognition, and selling or allowing the scraping of our personal photos + data from our personal pages are all things we can do without. Sort of like Facebook. It’s time to protectprivacy.

That's the point, Zuck. You have been innovating ways to steal private data from your users while your policies encourage freely expressing political hoaxes that undermine the democratic process. You proved you cannot behave yourselves without imposed rules. Stop whining.

if he is so smart let him work around protecting us from people and robots that attack our democracy. Maybe Rockefeller can help him this time too.

There already is limited freedom on Facebook for anyone who criticises the atrocious war crimes of Israel in its ethnic cleansing campaign in Palestine

Tough, FACEBOOK. You’re irresponsible. You’re platform is virtually malware and contains malicious and destructive content. There has to be some level of control over the lies for profit, the unsecured privacy. You need to build some floodgates.
