The NFL may be the only professional sports league to come out of the coronavirus pandemic unscathed, but 3 teams may find themselves turning to Plan B if the season begins as scheduled in August

“The Raiders would hold games on a Las Vegas playground before going back to Oakland this year,” says one NFL insider, who adds that the team is eager to start cultivating the Las Vegas fan base. The Raiders are said to be eyeing Sam Boyd Stadium, former home of the University of Las Vegas, as a backup plan. Other potential options include holding games in El Paso or San Antonio. The New Orleans Saints played three “home” games in 2015 at San Antonio’s Alamodome after Hurricane Katrina.

Marc Ganis, who serves as a consultant to multiple NFL teams, says Sam Boyd Stadium makes the most sense for the Raiders if they need a field for a home game or two to start the 2020 season. “It is okay Ganis doesn’t expect a major financial impact on the Raiders if the opening of Allegiant is delayed but says the venue will need a couple of “shakeout” events before hosting 65,000 people for a regular-season NFL game.
