'3-day weekends are better': Andrew Yang says the US should 'seriously' consider switching to a 4-day workweek to boost people's mental health

Justin Sullivan/Getty ImagesSome studies show 4-day workweeks increase worker satisfaction and productivity, and Microsoft's Japan subsidiary reported a 40% boost in productivity after trialing the change.

The coronavirus pandemic has increased interest in a 4-day work week as companies have been forced to adjust to new circumstances and experiment as more employees work from home.Andrew Yang — entrepreneur, CNN political commentator, and former US presidential candidate — thinks the US should "seriously" consider transitioning to a 4-day workweek to help boost workers' mental health and offer more opportunity for those with unique schedules or needs.

"3-Day weekends are better than 2-Day weekends," Yang said in a Monday tweet. "We should seriously look at 4-day workweeks. Studies show that we would be just as productive. It would create jobs at the margins and improve mental health." The concept of a 4-day workweek is not a new one, but it's gained more traction amid the coronavirus pandemic as companies were required to adapt to new circumstances with more employees working from home, some workers shifting schedules to take care of their families, and some positions transforming entirely., which highlighted studies indicating workers perform more productively in a 4-day workweek setting and report higher satisfaction in the workplace.

Lol!! Coming from a guy named 'Yang'... Meanwhile in China they practice 1 to 0-day workweek

Good luck with that. Do you realize how hard it was for them to accept work from home?

Idiot

AndrewYang seems like a sensible choice for a presidential candidate, I would have voted for him. Unfortunate

Benioff If you start your own business you can make it a 4 day work week. It’s called freedom. Until then butt out. Who the hell does Yang think he is suggesting a national policy on this?

Better yet - let's all just stop working completely and let the Federal Reserve pay for everything. That works, doesn't it?

Have been doing that for almost 10 years now... a mix of 4-10s and WFH on Friday’s. I’ve preferred 4-10s as it works better with traffic although I’ve also had a tendency to work on Fridays FH (bad habits). I think employers/managers will hopefully start to see the light.

Hey why not 7 day weekends when you can get a check from the govt / fed.

I thinks lots of people will continue to work the weekends to get ahead. Already happens in most big companies.

Will 'essential workers' be allowed to participate or will they be given 'heroes' t-shirts for serving the wfh crowd?

antont11988 WTF!

Makes sense to meeee

I love the idea

Reducing business hours could pay people more. Make people get back into the habit regular store hours instead of 24/7 assuring people get rest and recreation time.

This. Days off will lead to better mental health. Better mental health will lead to better workers. Everyone wins.

This I agree with haha

But salary shouldn’t be cut- we all do 5 days job in 4 days.
