Demonstrators protesting the death of George Floyd hold up placards near the White House on June 1 in Washington, D.C.Demonstrators protesting the death of George Floyd hold up placards near the White House on June 1 in Washington, D.C.As protests demanding racial justice have multiplied since the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis police custody last week, the spirit of reckoning has also spread across America, including within the music industry.
As the initiative gained traction over the weekend, especially on social media, companies and organizations including major record labels like Columbia, Interscope and Republic Records announced their participation. Just as quickly, some wondered what participation would mean, and many questioned whether the effort, embraced so quickly by huge corporations, would end up being an empty gesture rather than a sincere effort to counteract a history of exploitation.
Brianna Agyemang and Jamila Thomas, both of whom are black female executives in the recording industry, launched the campaign as a challenge to an industry that"has profited predominantly from Black art." In a statement, they continued: "Our mission is to hold the industry at large, including major corporations + their partners who benefit from the efforts, struggles and successes of Black people accountable. To that end, it is the obligation of these entities to protect and empower the Black communities that have made them disproportionately wealthy in ways that are measurable and transparent."
Those ways were not specifically defined, though the statement does say that a plan of action is forthcoming, and includes links to donate to memorial and legal funds for the families of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and Ahmaud Arbery, as well as several community bail funds.
Let me know when the mob hits BestBuy. I need a new TV.

Such hypocrisy; make money exploiting victimization now want to support victimizing others unless they dare differentiate between peaceful protests(MLK❤️) and rioters
The music community at large is taking over this initiative, so my guess is that there will be real follow up as long as labels and big-industry execs don’t have the final say in how this plays out. It’s up to our small, independent musicians and labels.
This trend is actually silencing the situation. Please pass this information on.
The major record labels are co conspirators in the racist campaign against blacks. They purposely steer black artists to sing & rap about death, violence, materialism, sexism, mysogyny, etc etc even while it erodes blk culture.🎤🎥👿 Hypocrisy
What “record labels?” Record labels still exist?
They crowdsourced the censorship of the last remaining sources of independent media from within.
These riots need to stop and the US needs a legit president who’s going to do something about it.
This blackout today will once and for all end racism! This is how change is made! I am so proud of our generation for finally doing this!
The quick and clean solution would be to hang the guilty red neck racist cop and do it live on TV for the whole world to watch. To make a strong LESSON to be learned for all the cops on the planet ‼️
Let’s do it
They should use their air time to tell people what’s really going on out here
