Apprentice commencement numbers have dropped by 33 per cent since the start of the coronavirus pandemic, according to the National Apprentice Association, with 16,000 apprenticeships been cancelled or suspended since March. Vocational training funding has been cut in recent years – it's thought this has also impacted the uptake of apprenticeships. The National Apprenticeship Association says Australia need 160,000 new apprentices each year in order to keep the system flowing. The number for the last 12 months is sitting around 151,000.
